SUTHERLIN SANTO

Sutherlin Santo is a research-driven design workshop operated by Garrett and Paul Sutherlin Santo.

Sutherlin Santo’s body of work has been dedicated to exploring the relationship between humans and nature by pairing emerging digital technologies with earth and plant-based materials. Merging techniques of the past with contemporary machines, Sutherlin Santo reexamines traditional and ancestral craft through a digital lens, projecting forward to a future where our technological and natural worlds are more closely aligned.

Using tools such as robotics, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence to mediate the human hand and subvert anthropocentric preconceptions, Sutherlin Santo’s work seeks to anticipate a future where design’s connection to nature and technology are symmetrical and technology is balanced with the human hand.

Garrett Sutherlin Santo received his Master of Architecture with distinction from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and dual Bachelor’s degrees (Art: Ceramics & Geography) with honors from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2014 and 2009, respectively. Garrett taught post-graduate applied research courses at SCI-Arc and recently held the position of CTO with responsibilities as head of Applied Research at the internationally awarded architecture firm, Baumgartner + Uriu (B+U). Paul Sutherlin Santo studied screenwriting and production design at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Media Arts, and went on to serve as a feature film Story Editor and Copywriter. Garrett and Paul currently research robotics and design for Nike Innovation out of its corporate headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.
